Social Bandits
A Social Bandit is a person that steals from the rich to give to the poor.
One social bandit is Joaquin Murrieta. He did not start out
as a social bandit he became one.
Some miners raped and killed his wife and hanged his brother. They beated him up
and left him for dead.
Murrieta became a leader of the band called The
Five Joaquins, which also included Joaquin Botellier, Joaquin Carrillo,
Joaquin Ocomorenia, and Joaquin Valenzuela. Between 1850 and 1853, these men,
along with Murrieta's right hand man, "Three-Fingered Jack" (Manuel Garcia),
were said to be responsible for the majority of cattle rustling, robberies, and
murders. It is said that Harry Love a Texas Ranger killed him and chopped his
head off and displayed it all over the country.
